A Backpack Is the Beginning: Student Success Day

Paradise Creek

The backpack helps them prepare for school. The community helps them prepare for life.

Coalition for Community Elevation brought families, volunteers, and community partners together at Paradise Creek for a day centered on student success, connection, and possibility. Through our Student Success Backpack Initiative, 30 young people received backpacks filled with notebooks and school supplies, along with Rubik's Cubes and chess sets designed to keep curiosity growing beyond the classroom.

The day went beyond distributing supplies. Young people were introduced to chess, encouraged to think strategically, and invited to learn alongside caring adults and one another. Families gathered around chessboards, shared laughter, and created the kind of welcoming space where children can feel supported, capable, and seen.

CCE spent time getting to know parents and students, teaching chess and exploring Rubik's Cubes together. Participants also signed up for chess lessons, creating a way to keep learning and connecting after the event.

We are grateful to Paradise Creek, every donor and volunteer, and each family who participated. Special thanks to Hall of Fame boxing referee Pat Russell, who joined us and took time to engage with the young people.
